Swimming Diapers: 10 Best Choices For Your Little One In 2022

Baby wipes, baby sunscreen, swim toys, life jackets, and tons of other baby products.

Wait, what about a swimsuit or a swimming diaper?

Going to the beach or a swimming pool with your little one is more like preparing for a ceremony.

Seeing that precious smile on their face makes it totally worth it, though, right?

While choosing the right sunscreen or baby wipes for your baby doesn’t require much effort, thinking about how to keep their poop from entering the pool is somewhat more challenging.

Or not?

Both little swimmers and parents can sigh in relief because swimming diapers are here to help!

The Best Swim Diapers For Your Little One

At last!

We’ve finally come to the fun part: checking out a collection of the most functional and stylish swimming diapers. So, let’s see what we have in store:

1. Huggies Little Swimmers Disposable Swim Diapers

Let’s face it. When it comes to baby gear and baby products, everything is so damn expensive (at least, the majority of things).

You find a perfect crib, but the only way to buy it is if you sell your car (literally).

But, no matter how frustrating, there is still a silver lining here. Believe it or not, it IS possible to find a great product that is budget-friendly.

But, to find such a product it takes time, lots of effort, and recommendations.

And that’s exactly how I found these Huggies Little Swimmers!

Just like the majority of you, I was so damn frustrated and worried about the poop scenario in a public pool.

When I mentioned it as a joke to my friend (I’m so happy that I did), she told me: I have three words that will save your life – Huggies Little Swimmers. And she was so right!

She’s been buying them for decades and they are everything I ever wanted in a swimming diaper.

They are budget friendly, functional, and stress free (no worrying about poop floating on a swimming pool or at the beach).

Another worry of mine was that annoying swelling effect.

But, believe it or not, they don’t swell at all!

And, most importantly, they are disposable which is awesome because we’re seldom frequent guests at the pool.

And the design! The Disney and Pixar Finding Nemo designs look simply adorable.

Perfect as swimwear or a poolside outfit (or beneath a bathing suit if the pool rules advise so). Gotta follow the rules!

2. Pampers Splashers Disposable Swim Diapers

Pampers. I remember when my mother was pregnant with my little brother and she was preparing everything for the newborn.

She had very large supplies of Pampers diapers.

And I was so fascinated by it. I would gaze for hours at that green/blue color on the package and all those happy babies.

I felt like I was encircled with those happy little creatures in the room, so I didn’t feel lonely even though I was.

So, one day I asked my mother: Mum, why do you only buy Pampers and why do you have so many?

And she just said: Because they’re the best and I don’t intend on going to the story every few days.

I like to have diaper supplies because I know I’ll have many other things to focus on after the baby is born.

Gotta trust your mum!

Today, as an adult, after reading so many reviews of Pampers, I can say for sure that she’s totally right because other mums have confirmed it, too.

The same thing goes with Pampers Splashers!

Just like the previous Huggies, they don’t swell in the water and they provide a comfy, snug fit.

What I love the most about them is their stretchy waistband. It means you can be sure the swimming diaper won’t be too tight or too loose. It will be just perfect.

Sea creatures, ice cream, sun...The design is totally, utterly adorable (God I’m really crazy about cute baby stuff).

I wish I could wear them, but lucky me (and the universe) because they come in three (S, M, L) baby sizes only.

3. iPlay Baby Snap Reusable Swim Diaper

If there’s anything in the world I hate, it’s boring and unimaginative stuff.

I apply that “rule” to basically anything from clothes to the way I talk and so on.

And I’m especially sensitive about it when it comes to kids. I don’t think they should strictly wear only pink if they’re a girl or only blue colors if they’re a boy.

I mean, what’s wrong with people?

Each color is beautiful and there is not a single color that is specifically reserved for males or females, but there are some variations when it comes to designs.

This swim diaper by iPlay is real proof of everything I just said (okay, wrote).

They come in a light blue color with cute sailboats. The background is light blue and there are many other colors like red, yellow, white, grey, and dark blue.

None of these colors nor the design screams boy or a girl.

This swim diaper is unisex and simply amazing! If you ask me, there should be more products like this because constantly dividing things into male or female is kind of frustrating.

They might look simple from the outside, but they are a true miracle from the inside.

They are made of three layers for the ultimate in comfort and protection.

So, you can be sure that no solid substance will come out and your child will feel free and comfy in them.

The snap closure will help you change the diaper easily and with no fuss.

And when it’s time to wash them, you simply throw them in the washing machine and voila.

No matter how many times you wash them, they will always be like new! And that’s exactly what I want and expect of every product.

4. Splash About Happy Nappy Reusable Swim Diapers

Remember what I said about my biggest nightmare being poop on the surface of a swimming pool or the beach?

For a long time, I was convinced that perfect, reusable swim diapers didn’t exist.

That is, until I heard about Splash About Happy Nappy reusable swim diapers.

One of my friends was literally obsessed with them.

She could talk for hours about these magical swim diapers (and trust me, she never talks for hours about any other topic).

So, I insisted on her showing me a picture of them because I needed proof that what she was talking about was true.

Well, I had proof of them being extremely functional because her child was wearing one and she was beyond content with them, but I needed more visible proof of the design.

When I saw them, my jaw literally dropped in amazement. I had never seen a similar design before.

They have this specific shape around the legs and waist, and thanks to this there’s not the slightest chance of any poop entering the water.

I told her that now I understand what she was talking about all this time.

I mean, this is the most reliable design I’ve ever seen and these swim diapers should be praised and recommended to everyone.

They are comfy, reliable, stylish and, most importantly, they are reusable.

Your child can wear them for an eternity (okay, not really for an eternity but until they outgrow them) and thank God, there are multiple sizes available.

And if you’re a cute design freak like me, this will be a heaven for you.

Butterflies, elephants, zebras, flowers, fish, you name it.

They come in so many different patterns and colors. There are tons of adorable variations for boys and for girls which makes these reusable swim diapers even more amazing.

5. Charlie Banana Reusable Swim Diapers

We all know that a baby’s skin is super delicate and sensitive and that’s why all my friends including myself are cautious when it comes to picking the right materials and designs.

I never buy anything that I know a child would feel entrapped or irritated in.

And that’s why Charlie Banana swim diapers rule!

When it comes to buying the right swim diaper, nylon is not an option. It might irritate the baby’s skin and cause a rash – which is not an option, right?

These swim diapers are made of 100% polyester and zero nylon.

What makes them stand out from the rest is their waterproof layer and soft elastics encircling the legs and waist, which means they provide the ultimate in comfort and a perfect fit.

They come in three adorable designs of which two are for girls (butterflies and flowers) and one is unisex (different lines and shapes).

And best of all, they come in sizes from small to x-large.

Lord knows how hard it is to find a perfect swimming diaper and the right size.

So, when I see that there are different sizes of a great product, I sometimes order a few in advance because babies grow real fast!

6. Girls’ Snap Reusable Absorbent Swimsuit Diaper

If you’re looking for an easy diaper to put on and use that’s also approved for use in public pools, then the Girl’s Snap reusable swim diaper might be the right call for you.

The diaper is made out of pure polyester, including the lining itself, ensuring a snug fit around the baby’s waist and her legs so no accidents leak out.

In fact, they’re so good that you don’t even need any other diaper under it to help contain any stray loads, just a swimsuit over it and your little one will be good to go.

This swim diaper relies on snaps to open and close which makes it a lot easier to access her back end and change her diaper quickly so she can return to swimming again.

The diaper itself doesn’t really feature the common bulk that most store-bought diapers tend to have but is rather perfectly trim, feeling like it’s not even there, allowing your child to swim freely without feeling burdened.

It’s also fully machine washable meaning you can get all that chlorine or saltwater out without worrying about the diaper’s quality getting ruined.

The best part is that it comes in well over a dozen different designs for you to choose from to help personalize your child’s swimwear!

7. Alvababy Reusable Swim Diapers

If you’re familiar with cloth diapers, you’ve probably heard of ALVABABY because they have one of the best quality cloth diapers on the market.

And the same can be said for their collection of swim diapers as well!

Buying tons of swim diapers to suit your baby’s growth is not really budget-friendly, but if you have this option, my advice is: Go wild!

However, if you want to save some money and buy a quality swim diaper, then these one-size reusable swim diapers are definitely the best choice (especially if you have more kids)!

They come in multiple designs for both boys and girls and some of them are unisex.

Does that mean you can get a reusable swim diaper that is unisex? Sweet Lord!

This is beyond budget-friendly if you ask me.

These swim diapers are adjustable and suitable for children 0-3 years of age.

There are three size adjustments for both height and waist, so a perfect fit is guaranteed.

On top of all that, this brand of swim diapers comes in packs that include two diapers, each in a different design.

One word: Pawesome! (Cat lovers will understand me on this one).

8. Nageuret Reusable Swim Diaper

As we’ve already established, disposable swim diapers are great for those who intend to go to the swimming pool or the beach just a few times.

In every other case, reusable swim diapers are the best bet (and that’s one of the reasons why there are so many of them on the market).

When it comes to reusable swim diapers, I prefer those that provide ultimate comfort, and are functional and stylish.

Like the rest of the swim diaper crew, these swim diapers provide all that and more!

They are perfectly adjustable for both waist and height and they are machine washable.

So, you don’t have to worry about the shape or the size of your child because these swim diapers will fit perfectly.

Another thing that caught my attention is the layer of polyester mesh and breathable outer fabric which is great for so many reasons including most importantly: No irritations, no rash = no worries.

When you know your child will be safe and feel comfy, you don’t think too much.

You do everything in your power to protect them and do the best for them.

9. Thirsties Reusable Swim Diapers

I remember times when I was really skinny and no matter the size I chose, there would always be gaps somewhere (especially in the waist area).

Finding a swimsuit for an adult who is skinny is a challenging task, let alone finding a well-fitting swim diaper for a newborn.

Their bodies are so sensitive and tiny and you become convinced that finding a swim diaper for your little one is mission impossible.

But, trust me, it’s not.

These reusable swim diapers will perfectly fit even the tiniest of newborns.

And not only that, they will also provide the ultimate protection and comfort, enabling your baby to freely move while in the water.

So, yes, now you can finally sigh in relief because Thirsties reusable swim diapers are everything you need for your little swimmer to enjoy the charms of summer!

10. Fun Well Reusable Swim Diapers

When looking for a perfect swim diaper, I pay close attention to these five things: protection, comfort, functionality, styling, budget.

This reusable swim diaper has it all, so there’s no need to explain every single one of these aspects in detail.

Another aspect that I forgot to mention is adjustment.

These swim diapers are adjustable for both waist and height, which means they are totally budget friendly and your little one will rock them for some time!

Stylish designs are abundant with mermaids, fish, construction trucks, elephants, and other animals.

Perfect for every water activity and the personality of your little one!

Why are swim diapers ‘The Saviors Of Summer’?

In other words: Why do you need them or do you need them at all?

I’ll try to explain this as simply as possible: If you’re taking your baby with you to a swimming pool or the beach and they aren’t potty trained – or they’ve just finished potty training – then yes, you need them.

You need swim diapers if you don’t want your baby’s poop rising to the surface in a public pool.

Also, you need them so that you can rest properly; read your summer books, enjoy a refreshing beverage, and absorb plenty of vitamin D, instead of constantly overthinking things and expecting the worst case scenario.

You need swim diapers because regular diapers are not suitable for water.

Unlike regular diapers, swim diapers are thin and they are less absorbent.

Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself: Why the hell do I need swim diapers if they don’t absorb properly?

I totally understand you. (Actually, that was the first thing that popped into my mind as well when I was introduced to swimming diapers.)

It’s important to understand that the main function of swimming diapers is not absorbency, but containing solids (poop). They are not leak proof.

Baby girl crawling in the pool shore

Imagine your baby entering a pool in regular diapers.

They would instantly become soaked with water and ten times heavier.

The heavy weight of the sodden diapers would literally pull your baby down to the swimming pool floor (or they’d fall off) and ruin all the joy.

So, there’s no real point in expecting absorbency to be met when it comes to water activities.

Water and pee are liquid and liquid substances cannot and do not need to be stopped from entering the pool water. That’s why we have chlorine.

But, poop is solid and therefore needs to be contained. That’s where swim diapers come into the picture!

They are not meant for regular diapering.

They are lighter than regular diapers and they are designed purely for containing any undesirable solid enemies of pool water (if you catch my drift).

Because we don’t want to risk fecal contamination, right?

We, as conscientious citizens and parents, want to protect both our children and other people from any potential harm.

So, using swimming diapers is the least we can do, right? Yes, of course.

Are swim diapers suitable for every child?

Another important thing to note is that swimming diapers are not really suited for newborns whose poop is still liquid or for children with diarrhea.

If you’re wondering why, remember that swim diapers don’t have the ability to absorb any of these liquid substances in water.

If this is the case with you, fear not.

This doesn’t mean your child shouldn’t experience the joys of water and summer in other ways.

You always have a tub or a paddling pool as an option.

And if you have a garden outside the house, oh joy! You can sunbathe and chill outside while keeping an eye on your child.

Of course, this is just until their poop becomes more solid when you can experience the joy of the public pool as well.

Now that we’ve got all that straight, we can move on to the types of swimming diapers available and other swimming diaper features! Yay!

Types Of Swim Diapers

As with everything, there’s a wide array of swimming diapers available, but the two main categories are: disposable and reusable.

Both of them have their own pros and cons and it’s up to you to decide which will work best for your child. So, let’s see:

Disposable swim diapers

As the name implies, disposable swim diapers or disposable swim pants are intended for one use only (at least one per poop if you’re not planning on removing it).

They are usually cheap, although this isn’t necessarily a good thing.

You know what they say: “I don’t have enough money to buy cheap things.” As with other things, the cheaper the disposable swim diapers, the less effective they are.

However, if you don’t intend to go swimming on a regular basis, they might be the right choice for you.

Now, the biggest advantage of disposable swim diapers is their convenience and low maintenance.

Baby summer necessities lying on top of sand beach

In other words, when your little one fills the swimming diaper with poop (when it’s time to change them and go home), all you have to do is throw them in a disposable diaper bag or a trash can.

This means you don’t need to deal with getting rid of the solid substance, which can be a real pain in the ass even for the most experienced parents.

After all, you’re supposed to enjoy every summer moment and not spend it collecting your child’s poop.

OK, doing it a few times is fine, but if you intend to be a regular at a swimming pool during the whole summer, then reusable swimming diapers might be the right choice for you!

Reusable swim diapers

Unlike disposable swimming diapers, reusable swim diapers are high maintenance.

What does this mean?

It means that you have to get rid of the solid substance from the diaper and flush it down the toilet.

You can’t just throw it in the trash like you do with disposable ones.

And you need to make sure you remember to take the reusable swim diaper with you when you go home.

It’s best to pack it in a special diaper bag so that you don’t mix it with other items in your bag.

Reusable swim pants are like a regular swimsuit and you also wash them like a regular swimsuit as well.

Most reusable diapers are machine washable which is a huge advantage.

You don’t have to worry about whether you’ll have time to hand wash them once you get home.

Instead, you can cuddle with your little one or continue chilling while your baby is resting or sleeping, exhausted from all the water activities that day.

Also, you’re doing nature a favor because these reusable swim diapers are environmentally friendly, meaning you won’t have created a pile of swim diapers at the end of summer and suffocated the environment.

Another thing that I’ve noticed about these diapers is their sensitivity.

They are softer and more sensitive than the disposable ones which means they are ten times a better choice for your child if they are prone to rashes, or any other kind of complaint related to overly sensitive baby skin.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Just because they are reusable, this doesn’t mean your child will be able to wear them forever.

Babies grow like flowers, so you’ll probably have to buy a new one for every upcoming summer season.

Still, it’s a great investment which will save you tons of money if you and your little one are regular participants of water activities.

Disposable vs Reusable – Which one to choose?

As you can see, there are many pros and cons regarding both kinds of swim diapers.

If you buy the right ones (not the cheapest ones), both can be equally effective and the biggest difference is in the maintenance aspect.

Disposable swim diapers don’t require washing, whereas reusable swim diapers require you to both dispose of any solid substances and wash them, but are a great investment in the long run.

Now, the biggest question is whether your child plans on going to the beach or a swimming pool only a few times or regularly – aka the whole summer?

Mothers and their kids having fun at baby swimming lesson

If the answer is a few times, I suggest you stick to the disposable because it will save you time and your nerves (and you won’t be left with a pile of swim diapers at the end of the summer).

And if the answer is regularly, then reusable swim diapers are the right choice for you.

So, when choosing between the two, think of the frequency you’ll be participating in water activities and you’ll get the right answer.

It’s important that your choice is eco-friendly and budget-friendly (okay, and effort-friendly).

Different Features Of The Swim Diapers

As we’ve already established, not every swim diaper is the same.

We categorize them as disposable and reusable and both of them differ in size, material, and fixing styles.

To help you choose the right swim diaper for your little one, here are some more things you need to take into account:

Comfort

To be able to contain solid substances (poop), swim diapers are designed to fit tighter.

If they’re too loose, your child is at risk of having his/her poop rise to the surface in a public pool or at the beach.

But, if they’re too tight, your child will feel uncomfortable and trapped. They won’t have much space to freely move in the water without cursing the swim diaper in their own baby language.

Stack of swimming diapers on a white background

So, how do you know whether they’re too tight or too loose?

You’ll know that it’s too tight if it leaves red marks on your baby’s skin and you’ll know that it’s too loose if it’s too baggy and looks like it will fall off the second your child starts moving.

Finding the perfect size is a must, so pay special attention to that!

Material

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the importance of the right material when it comes to both clothes for adults and babies.

As a person with sensitive skin, I can’t risk wearing materials that will scratch my skin or irritate it and as a result drive me crazy.

The same thing goes with a baby’s skin.

As a matter of fact, their skin requires more attention because it’s more sensitive. Now imagine your little one being active in his/her swim diapers all day.

Babies are like kittens. They are curious, playful, and tireless. Our job is to feed their curiosity and protect them.

baby boy in sun protection shirt and swimming diaper playing

These days, a large number of swim diapers are made of polyester mesh, but some cheaper versions are made of nylon.

You want to avoid those cheaper versions unless you want your baby to feel irritated or get covered in a rash.

Fixing styles

Another important aspect of swim diapers is their fixing style.

To be more precise, there are three ways in which you can fix your baby’s swim diaper.

Again, each style has its own advantages and disadvantages:

Snaps

As the name implies, this kind of swimming diaper is secured with snaps.

Now, this is a huge advantage when it comes to the art of an easy diaper change. Side snaps will help you prevent poop from “spreading further” as you remove the diaper.

Now for the disadvantage. Ready? The biggest disadvantage of the snaps style is the potential difficulty in clipping them together if sand gets stuck in there.

But, if you won’t be anywhere near sand, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Pull Up

The pull up style is awesome when it comes to pulling the swim diapers up. It’s basically like regular underwear.

But, when it comes to pulling those swim diapers down, you might have an issue.

Unlike the snap style, the pull up style makes it difficult to keep the solid substance (poop) in the diaper while taking it off.

We all know that children like to wriggle a lot.

Now imagine a jiggling baby and you trying to find the right balance while removing the swim diapers.

Not exactly the perfect combination, right?

Velcro

Remember what we said about the importance of the right size?

That it’s not good if the swim diaper is too tight or too loose. Well, with Velcro, you can easily adjust the tightness to fit your baby perfectly.

But, we know that we can’t have our cake and eat it, too, right?

The disadvantage of Velcro is the potential scratches on your baby’s sensitive skin, which may eventually result in rashes. Yup.

Final Thoughts

I hope you’ve learned a lot of things about swimming diapers – their types, features and so on – and that you’ve been able to pick one (or a few of them) for your little swimmer!

Whichever one you pick, keep in mind this one thing: Not too tight, not too loose!

I wish you happy summer activities and lots of fun!

Enjoy with your little one! (Yup, it rhymes as well).
