In this day and age, everyone’s in love with fiction and would desperately love to escape into one of those fantasy worlds, even if it’s just for a little while.
So why not give your future son a taste of that by choosing one of these great sci-fi and cool fantasy boy names?
Do keep in mind that you can’t use just any sci-fi and unique fantasy boy names that come to mind as some aren’t exactly appropriate and will probably sound odd in real life.
As much fun as it would be for you, you want to ensure a normal childhood for your kiddo and not make him a target of teasing for whatever reason.
I know it sounds oddly restrictive, but we do have to keep the future of our little ones in mind and no parent wants their child to be bullied.
Maybe your kid’s kids will have more freedom with their names, but, for now, it’s probably better to play it safe.
I myself am a big fan of everything sci-fi and fantasy and I love names like Obi-wan or Rincewind.
But even fantasy names need to know some limits since they’ll stick with your child for his entire life.
That’s why I’ve made this list of sci-fi and fantasy names for your boy to give you an idea of some good ones that you could definitely consider!
Fantasy Boy Names And Meanings
1. Aang
A somewhat unusual name, but guaranteed to send many modern parents and kids alike on a trip of nostalgia is Aang, the name belonging to the last Airbender of his time and the Avatar.
He was just a young pre-teen boy who had a big burden on his shoulders to help unite the nations of the world and bring about peace, and he managed to do just that over the course of his journey in as peaceful a way as possible.
The method rings true to the meaning of his name, which is “peaceful soaring” and if you’re looking out for a more unique, but meaningful name, then I wouldn’t pass this one up.
2. Anakin
One of the main characters of the Star Wars saga, Anakin is arguably one of the most iconic character names of the late 20th century.
He is the father of Luke and Leia, as well as Darth Vader himself before succumbing to the dark side.
While I’m sure your child will remain on the side of good, this is still a fantastically unique boy name that’s straight out of sci-fi to give to your kiddo.
3. Artemis
A unisex name taken from Greek mythology and attributed to the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and fertility.
However, if ancient Greece isn’t your cup of tea, then you can also look towards Artemis Fowl, the name of a child prodigy from the titular novel by Eoin Colfer.
4. Arthur
While not necessarily a unique name, it’s certainly one that many people love using simply due to its ties to the Arthurian legend.
It represents the legendary King Arthur and his knights of the round table.

Who wouldn’t want their boy to have a name that has such fame behind it?
5. Atreyu
You might remember the classic film The Neverending Story based on the novel written by Michael Ende.
You might also remember Atreyu, a young boy and one of the main protagonists of this novel, who goes out to find a cure for the queen of Fantasia.
The name meaning “the son of all” in German lore and “warrior” in Sanskrit has both German and Indian roots.
With those meanings behind it, Atreyu is truly one of those fantasy boy names fit for kids who everyone will see as friendly.
It might be a bit unusual, but that’s part of the charm.
6. Bastian
Speaking of The Neverending Story, we have Bastian Balthazar Bux, though we only need the first part of that long name.
Formerly an abbreviation for the name Sebastian, now it’s just a standalone fantasy name, and it can be your son’s too.
7. Ben
This three-letter name for boys might seem plain, but there have been a few Bens in sci-fi fiction over the years.
One of the most familiar ones is Ben Kenobi from Star Wars, otherwise known as Obi-wan, but Ben is a bit more appropriate for our non-Jedi society.
There is also a more recent character with that name, Ben Tennyson from the cartoon Ben 10, an icon of the first decade of the 21st century and someone your boy would likely love to relate to.
A lot of future parents gravitate toward names from anime and comic books, so this wouldn’t be a strange choice at all.

If you believe your child will be a pacifist in the future, then Carlisle might be the right name for him.

Of course, who can forget Casper, the friendly ghost?
He’s the friendliest I know, at least!

However, he and his crew meet a rather tragic end.

He’s a Hufflepuff who, alongside Harry, represents Hogwarts at the Triwizard tournament.
He meets an untimely end once he and Harry are transported to a graveyard where he makes a heroic stand against Voldemort and his minions.

It rolls off the tongue rather easily too as it’s a boys’ name with only 2 syllables.

Ah, Conan the Barbarian, an icon of western cartoons in the latter half of the 20th century and an inspiration for young boys everywhere.
There’s a movie adaptation as well portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger which was wonderfully funny.

Thankfully, he manages to wrestle away from falling in too deep with Lord Voldemort and committing any obscene acts.

The heartthrob of many high school girls everywhere, Edward Cullen is a character from the Twilight Saga written by Stephanie Meyer.

Maybe because it means “wealthy guardian”?

If you’re looking for a real blast from the past, how about the name Emmett?

It’s also the name of one of the Cullen family members from The Twilight Saga.
19. Fox

It’s infamy comes from Batman’s rogues gallery and it belongs to Dr. Hugo Strange.

You don’t have to go too far into fantasy to find a name that sounds like it’s straight out of a fantasy world.
Take the name Idris from Idris Elba for example.
It belongs to the famous actor who has starred in many sci-fi and fantasy series, so why not try that one on for size?
27. Jaime
Ser Jaime Lannister is one of the most recognizable figures from Game of Thrones.
He’s the Kingslayer who deposes many mad kings so that they can be replaced, not that it ends well for him.

He’s an honorable man despite unfortunate circumstances depicting otherwise.

Sure he might have been a mean little Lannister, but his name still sounds rather fitting for a happier child.

Everybody knows Jon Snow, the protagonist of the Game of Thrones books and TV series.
The secret son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, the King in the North, the Lord Commander, and the Whitewalker slayer.
Many other titles adorn this self-made man who proves to others that you can succeed and be an inspiring leader without having to resort to monstrous violence.
That’s why his name is my top pick on the fantasy boy names list.
33. Kael
Prince Kael’Thas Sunstrider of the Blood Elves is an iconic lore figure in the Warcraft games.

However, during the later chapters of the books, he turns over a new leaf and defects over to the good side, helping them in the final battle against Voldemort.

This is a merrier name than most other fantasy boy names on this list as it belongs to one of the hobbits in the Lord of the Rings.
He’s one of Bilbo’s cousins which gives the name some extra recognition.
While Odo might sound like a rather odd name, it’s still not as unusual as naming your child Legolas would be or something else that would feel very out of place in our society.
It’s also the name of a Changeling security chief in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
While not the most prominent of characters, the name itself is concise and carries a charm of its own.
It translates to one who’s “wealthy” in the olden English language.

This is another Star Wars name and it belongs to one of the Resistance’s greatest pilots, Poe Dameron.

The former helps an alien race called the Na’vi preserve their culture and planet while the latter works as a fear harvester who befriends a little girl who doesn’t find him as scary as other kids do.
Whichever one you choose, the name clearly befits a heroic character in every sense of the word, be it on the more empathetic or combat-oriented side.

It has Roman and Latin roots, representing someone who’s “strong and healthy”.
68. Viktor
Apart from being a go-to foreigner name in any Hollywood movie when representing someone of Slavic descent, Viktor is a rather prominent name in both fantasy and sci-fi.
One of the most well-known figures with this name is Marvel’s Viktor von Doom, better known as Dr. Doom.
Another is J.K. Rowling’s Viktor Krum, a foreign exchange student from Durmstrang who appears in the 4th installment of the book series, the Goblet of Fire.

However, that shouldn’t put you off using it as it’s one of the better sounding and very common fantasy names for boys.
69. Vincent

It’s a rather common name in the real world too, which means it won’t be particularly odd for you to use it to name your sweet baby boy.
In Conclusion
While looking through other lists of fantasy boy names, I noticed that there are many names mentioned that would never work in the real world and would probably make your kid the target of merciless teasing.
Sure, it may be limiting to think this way, but you’re not naming a fantasy character in a book.
It’s your child and grabbing a name that might appear a bit too outlandish might get him bullied.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that this little bundle of joy will one day be a fully formed individual with emotions and opinions.
One of your first responsibilities as a parent is giving him a sensible name he can be proud of.
I do hope you manage to find one that ticks all the right boxes though and that both you and your future son have loads of wonderfully memorable adventures together.
Until next time, mammas.
